ABOUT LEA ROWING CLUB
Lea Rowing Club
Affiliated to British Rowing, Lea R.C. is open to people of all levels of experience, aged from 12 upwards. We always welcome new members who want to compete at the highest level nationally and internationally, or simply want to enjoy rowing socially and being part of our community.
Where do we row?
We are the closest rowing club to The City (30 minutes by bike or public transport), and row on a stretch of water that runs from Tottenham to just beyond the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Squads
We have a range of squads for men, women, masters, novices and juniors, allowing members to row competitively at any age, ability or level of development. We operate a ‘pyramid' structure that replicates the British Rowing system – from elite and club level, to recreational. Our Rowing pages have more information on our senior, junior and recreational squads.
When we train
You’ll usually find us rowing or training indoors on early mornings Monday–Thursday, and from 8am until around 2.00pm on weekends, with squad each having its own schedule of sessions.
We also run recreational, community and school rowing sessions for adults and juniors on weekends and some weekdays.
What are the club’s origins?
Lea R.C. takes its name from its location on the River Lea, a tributary of the Thames at the foot of Spring Hill in Hackney, London E5. The club was founded in 1980 by the members of five rowing clubs then active on the Springhill site, continuing a tradition of rowing on the Lea that can be traced back for almost two hundred years. For more about Lea R.C.’s origins visit our History page. We continue to have strong connections with the local community with whom we share the river.
Our coaches
We have numerous British Rowing certified coaches with a history of producing top athletes. We welcome new coaches and support our members in attaining coaching qualifications. Take a look at our Coaches page to find out more about our coaching team.
Regattas
Our British Rowing accredited regattas in Spring and Autumn, welcome competitors from around the London and Eastern region, and the local community to spectate. Find more information on our Regattas page.
Our achievements
We have produced successful male and female athletes from junior through to senior age groups over the years. We have won at Henley Royal Regatta six times and won countless national and international championship medals. Our high-achieving juniors have regularly competed for GB and England, both nationally and internationally. See our Hall of Fame for more details.
Learn to row
Lea R.C. welcomes anyone to come and try the sport through our adult courses and junior programmes. See more on our Learn to Row and Junior Rowing pages.
