Schools’ Rowing FAQs

Why rowing?

Rowing is a great way for your students to keep fit, enjoy sport, learn new skills and work together as a team.

What age can my students be?

We accept students from year 7 through to 6th Form College. To take part students need to be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing (rowing/PE kit).

How many rowing sessions should I book?

You can book for half a term, a whole term or for the whole year. If your students would like to take rowing as part of their GCSE PE, or as an enrichment option we will work with you to tailor the programme to your needs and aims.

How long is the session?

The recommended session length is 1.5 hours. This includes getting the boats on and off the water and the session on the water.

What will the course cover?

Depending on the length of course taken, coaches will cover:

  • Understanding the health and safety requirements for rowing on the water and safety around the boathouse.

  • Gaining basic skills and knowledge of rowing terminology.

  • Experiencing sculling (two oars) and possibly sweep (one oar) rowing.

  • Care and handling of equipment including launching and landing boats.

  • How to cox a crew boat and how to steer.

  • Using the rowing machine and how to set the monitor.

How many students can I bring?

The maximum number of students per session is 12. We work on a ratio of 2 coaches to 12 students but this is subject to activity, age and ability.

What should my students wear/bring to the session?

Your child should wear kit that is not too loose (it can get caught in the boat/equipment), leggings or shorts, high viz top, hat if hot/very cold, sun lotion if hot, layers if cold, trainers, towel, change of kit, and a bottle for water.

Our students have additional needs. Are we able to bring them rowing?

If your students have additional needs please contact our Head of Schools’ Programme via our Contact page to discuss. We have coached students with autism, Down’s Syndrome, visual impairments and other additional needs. As the students may need more support we will probably advise a smaller group of 6–8 students as well as needing additional support from carers or teaching staff.

Are the coaches qualified?

At least one of the coaches will have a Level 2 United Kingdom Certificate in Coaching (UKCC) and will have completed a First Aid training course and attended a Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop. All coaches are DBS checked

Do you supply risk assessments and other paperwork for the school?

Yes, please look at our Schools Resources documents.

What other rowing opportunities are there for students who have attended the school sessions?

Students who enjoy their experience are offered the opportunity to take their participation in the sport a step further by becoming members of the Lea Rowing Club. Depending on their age, ability and commitment they may join Junior Club Squad (JCS) which is the Club’s junior recreational squad, or the Girls’/Boys’ Performance Squads, our competition squads. Members of these squads pay a Club subscription. Bursaries are available.

Which schools has Lea R.C. worked with?

The Club has worked successfully with many schools from surrounding boroughs including Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest.

Do we have to come to the club?

We are able to run indoor rowing clubs at your school.

Can I visit the Club?

Yes, contact our Head of Schools’ Programme via our Contact page for more information or to arrange a visit.
