About Lea Rowing Club
We are Hackney’s rowing club. Founded in 1980 from the merger of five predecessor
clubs, we represent almost two hundred years of rowing heritage in East London.
Today Lea RC is one of the UK’s largest rowing clubs, with over 400 members and 100
junior athletes. We offer rowing to all ages and abilities with squads ranging from
recreational to high performance rowing. In 2022 we were named British Rowing’s Club
of the Year.
We have a great track record of taking juniors to succeed at the highest levels of the
sport. In the last seven years, Junior athletes in the club have won over 10 national titles
and almost a dozen athletes have represented Great Britain. Through rowing, our juniors
have gone on to achieve life-changing opportunities to row at world-class Universities in
the UK and USA. Our alumni have won the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race and become
World Champions.
About the role
Lea Rowing Club has a long and proud tradition of supporting junior rowing. Our
ambition is to help the young talent of Hackney, Waltham Forest and Haringey to get
into rowing and to give them the chance to be the best they can be – whether that is
representing Great Britain or simply finding a community and a reason to turn up each
week. We want rowing to be open to all, regardless of background.
We are ambitious about the future of our junior system. Although we have achieved a
huge amount over the last decade, we think we can go further and for that reason we
want to institute our first professional lead to overall run our junior system. As part of
our transition from a volunteer-led approach, we are offering this interim position now
while we work through over the coming year the long-term model we want to adopt.
The Interim Head of Junior Rowing will therefore be the professional responsible for the
overall leadership, organisation and administration of our junior rowing programme. You will be accountable to the Club’s leadership for the effective running of the junior
system, including its budget, safeguarding and welfare matters, and logistics for races
and camps.
As overall head of our junior programme, you will effectively manage the programme’s
resources. You will act as budget holder, delegated from the Captain, for the junior
budget of approximately £150,000. You will line manage all junior coaches, including
the two professional coaches and 15 session coaches (both paid and volunteer).
As a leadership role, we expect you to be capable of delivering e\ectively through
others, being comfortable delegating and developing people to fulfil tasks you are
accountable for.
Although this role will be responsible for all junior coaching, this is not primarily a
coaching role. While there will be opportunities to coach, we need you to be working
tirelessly to support our athletes off the water, taking burdens o\ our volunteers and
coaches, and spotting new opportunities to grow and develop our junior system.
As this is an interim role, this position is being o\ered on a fixed-term basis for the
duration of the 2026/27 rowing season. Applicants should be aware that successor
roles will be advertised separately.
This role will require flexible working, which will include a requirement to work early
mornings, evenings and weekends. You will also need to travel to attend competitions or
training camps.
We are looking someone to come into post ahead of the new season start in September.
